The Signal Tower

The Signal Tower and person with dog.

These pics were taken a couple of weeks back at Arbroath harbour. Above is looking south west towards Carnoustie over the harbour bar. The Signal Tower is just visible at the far right.

The seagull had one eye on me.

This is where I park my yacht.

The Signal Tower. Now a Museum. Originally built (as its name suggests) as the Signal Tower for the Bell Rock Lighthouse, it was completed nearly 200 years ago in 1813. In the 1950's, the building was converted into council houses, how cool would they have been? I really must get round to a post devoted solely to Lighthouses and the Stevenson family involvement with them. It's all fascinating stuff......

In the meantime I recommend a visit to this website for a bit more info on the Signal Tower and if you're interested in that then the rest of the site is fascinating too. Enjoy.

  1. Wonderful shots, Neil! I have a thing about water and lighthouses, so all of these spoke to me. And, in addition, you always provide humorous dialog that provides me with some always needed laughter!

    Have a great week!

  9. This was a nostalgic blog visit for me. In 1989 my late husband and I spent two days in Arbroath. In fact, we stayed at a B and B facing the harbour - could it have been called Harbour House? We visited the ruined church, went to church on Sunday at a local church, ate oat cakes and haddock and walked the cliffs in very cold weather before returning to Edinburgh via St Andrews.

  12. I didn't realise you had parked your yatch next to mine. The Signal Tower looks great. I agree you must dedicate a post to lighthouses and the Stephensons, it makes fascinating reading. My old neighbour (the one that died recently) lent me a book, I think it was called The Lighthouse Stephensons, and it was very, very interesting.

  13. Lovely colours and light to your photos Neil -I can almost taste the salt in the air.

And so handy to be able to bring your yacht up to the edge of town - must cut down on the travelling time marvellously!
