Twisty chimneys

Driving between Carnoustie (that hotbed of dubious paddling activity) and Forfar last week I stopped at this fantastic pair of gate houses. Again it's one of those places I've driven by often, but it's only when you stop and have a good nose around that you can really appreciate it.
The houses are identically opposite, if you know what I mean. And I can only assume that they were the gateway to something more spectacular, but I've no idea what.
The wrought ironwork was pretty special, but the thing that really caught my eye was the twisty chimneys.... and I'm pretty sure I know at least one other person who will love them too....Cool or what?

  2. In the wrought ironwork it says 1869 - is that a clue as to what it gated?

  3. Beautiful architecture and the wrought iron is wonderful.
I like the way the barley twists go in opposite directions. I'd love to have barley twist chimneys but they'd look a bit odd on our 1950s house!

  4. I have to admit - I would love to have one of this houses to be my giant castle - just enough for me! I liked how you started with a detail and then zoomed out with pictures and with the story - great work! Enjoyed it a lot!

  6. Chris, Neil is a tease... like the 'but that's another story...' narrator on that Hammy Hamster tv show (wondering how internationally that translates)... it's like the Hotel California, this blog. ;-)

  7. The twisted chimneys look awesome! It's one design that can really amaze a person. The ironwork looks pretty cool, too! It's a great way to wow visitors or even the ones who are just passing by the place. You appreciated the place a lot that you even took photos for your memory, right? Others would do the same thing.
