Forfar Loch

My first visit to the loch this year. I took these a couple of weeks ago. Literally the first time the weather's been bearable enough to make the venture.

I thought these pics seemed to benefit from a bit of colour drainage.

Seen Any Otters?

Took these about a month ago at Forfar Loch. Halfway around the perimiter path you come across a little peninsula thing where they have a sort of boat house and launching area.

The word on the street is that this is one of the best areas to spot those elusive otters......

..... but I've yet to come across the wee buggers.

I'm beginning to take it personally...

Sunset on Forfar Loch

I had a long drive down to the Borders and back yesterday to pick up my daughter for the school holidays. As is normal driving through Scotland it was pretty much four seasons in one day. Only thing missing was a bit of snow, but apparently that's due back in the middle of the week!

As we passed by Perth and Dundee we were treated to some spectacular skies, the views around Kinnoull Hill especially nice. Unfortunately the traffic was a bit fast and heavy for a drive by!

Despite being knackered from the drive, I couldn't let my bloggerbuddies down, so I stopped off at Forfar Loch to grab these pics. I know, I know.......I spoil you at great personal sacrifice.......

Bravely and selflessly shrugging off the debilitating effects of my marathon drive, the aching limbs, the pounding headache, the sheer physical exhaustion, I nevertheless dragged my sorry arse down to the Loch because I knew it would be selfish and remiss of me to keep this beauty all to myself......

....now excuse me while I go polish my halo......

Manflu

Due to a particularly vicious attack of manflu, my brain is unable to put together both words and pictures this Scenic Sunday....

And just in case there are those of you out there who doubt the severity of this awesomely debilitating condition I include these quotes from an established academic source.... The Uncyclopedia....

'Man flu' (not to be confused with woman flu, nor the much less serious actual flu) is the single most fatal illness in the known universe. It is estimated that every year 482 million men die from this disease, making it more devastating than such great illnesses as the Black Death and the Black Death II. There is only one species known to man that is immune to the devastating man flu; Women. It is for this reason that many cynical women are unable to comprehend the sheer enormity of suffering induced by man flu, having only suffered their puny woman flu.

There are, of course, alternative views about the origin of Man flu. The most popular theory is that God himself was the first ever sufferer of man flu and that it's because of this that he hasn't returned for judgement day or finished the Forth Bridge. On a similar note his only son Jesus was suffering man flu when nailed to the cross and this was the single cause for his death (did you honestly think God's offspring could be killed by a couple of nails?!).

At present there is no known cure for Man flu. However, there are a small number of remedies that have been scientifically proven to ease suffering:
At least a week off work, two weeks if especially serious.
Having a TV next to the bed.
Having the man's girlfriend wait on him hand and foot.

so there....

Duh!

The Late Bird Catches The Goose

At around 3pm this afternoon I decided I'd go and catch the last couple of hours of daylight to take some pics. Picking up my camera, I thought it might be an idea to check the battery.....

Dead.

So I had to charge it for an hour.

Eventually I made it down to Forfar Loch at around 4.15pm....

I think I hit it at just the right time. The setting sun was creating some beautiful colours both across the loch and in the sky.

The reflections of the sky on the partially frozen loch created a scene of calming beauty.

This would've been quite a good pic if I hadn't managed to catch the grass in the foreground and the arse of the duck disappearing bottom left...... I should've cropped it but hey....It's the weekend and I'm allowed to be lazy.

By the time I got around to taking these, I could no longer feel my hands.... It was seriously cold.

It got to the point where I was sticking both thumbs in my mouth to try to warm them up!

I just hope nobody saw me.

As I was kneeling down to get this pic, a wee girl approached me. She must have been around nine or ten. Her Dad was a bit behind her. She looked out over the ice and the ducks and geese, took it all in and said to me, 'Ooh that's soooo nice. Look at the way they're all standing on the ice'..... Not in your usual ten year old excitable way, but more thoughtful and restrained.

I had to swallow hard...... a little thing like that can make your day.

Bloody Midges

EDIT : As an afterthought, I thought it would be a bit heartless not to include the big yellow combine harvester. Given that it was the highlight of my day seeing this thing appear over the top of the ridge........ 'How sad was your day? '.....I hear you say. Check out the swallow (swift?) thingy.

A selection of skies over the past two days between Arbroath and Forfar. The above pic was taken north of Carnoustie just before the barley was harvested. A big yellow combine harvester was rolling up and down the field to the left of this scene.

A view over Forfar Loch this evening. The midges were out in force and my head's still itching. Wee buggers.

Looking west over the Loch...... still not seen those otters......

Seagull on lookout duty at Arbroath Harbour today.

Forfar Gargoyles

I've neglected Forfar on this blog. Porobably due to the fact that I live here and don't really find it that interesting. I think we're all kinda like that. You don't really appreciate what's on you own doorstep, as they say.

This is the County Buildings in Market Street. An imposing building which stands on a rise and is visible from many areas in the town.

It now houses the Sherriff Court and Angus Coucil offices. I searched the internet to get some historical info on it, but the best I could get was this :

'The Court House was by James Maitland Wardrop (Brown and Wardrop) between 1869 and 1871. It has a symmetrical U-plan front with crow stepped gables, central balcony; gargoyles and circular tower with conical roof on the West and a single storey and attic wing to the North East. This was the same architect as for the Reid Hall, in 1869 but which has since been fire damaged and much reconstructed.'

Pretty poor eh?

It would appear there is an 'Open Day' coming up. This is when they throw the doors open for us mere plebs to have a nose around, I may take them up on their offer and take my camera.

I'd quite like to see what's on the inside, without of course being summonsed to appear before the judge!

Thistles and Puddles

Iconic Scottish image.......complete with wee beastie. I've never known whether the thistle should be regarded a a flower or a weed. Can anyone enlighten me on this one? People cultivate them in their gardens here..... not a lot it has to be said, but you do see them. On the other hand they're plentiful in the wild.

And anyway, why are they an iconic Scottish image? Answers on a postcard please.

All these pics were taken around Forfar Loch a few weeks back. As you can see from the above pic, there's quite a lot of algae on the loch just now. However it has improved in recent years. At it's worst the smell used to drift over the town and it could be breathtaking...... in an eye watering kind of way.

There are well maintained paths all around the loch and it's about a three mile walk. I've been desperate to see the otters which have taken up residence, but no luck yet.

These purple things are everywhere...... anyone tell me what they are?

We've never struggled to see puddles this summer...... I liked this one and the way the grass is poking up through the rainwater.
