Erected in 1851 by the good citizens (for citizens, read landowners) of Forfar in recognition of the Tory who would become a Liberal, Sir Robert Peel. That's right, he of Peelers fame.
They were apparently so grateful for the part he played in repealing the Corn Laws they felt it necessary to dip into their pockets to erect this memorial to him.
They obviously had too much money.......
Imagine! BTW...there's a tiny village called Forfar about an hour north of Kingston, Ontario...used to be a great cheese factory there...your trivia for the day:>)
ReplyDeleteObviously.
ReplyDeleteWow, another Angus Sphinx! It's freakin' Valley of the Kings near you.
ReplyDeleteAnd that is some serious ass kissing. Nice though... the architecture, I mean, not kissing Peel's ass. I can think of far more kissable asses... can't you, Neil? ;-)
Great architecture. Interesting story.
ReplyDeleteWhat they did with the spare change is just amazing.
ReplyDeleteWow, all this for just one man. Great photos, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGlad you managed gargoyles this time Neil.
ReplyDeleteThe money didn't come from the landowners. It came from the working population in gratitude for him removing the tax on grain (bread). He wasn't popular with the land owning classes.
